    Miriam Makeba was a famous South African singer and civil rights activist who passed away in 2008. Known as Mama Africa, Makeba helped popularize African music in the West and around the world, winning various awards along the way including a Grammy. 

   
   

   Makeba was exiled briefly for her stance against the Apartheid in her native South Africa. Her legacy lives on.
