Though it is not known, tom Navy came to the islands while the tanna islnd people were at war. He taught them to get along with one another. The tannaians love hime and he is known as a prophet  to them.  He brought them peace and that is what a world needs now.

okay how stupid are you all, check out navy records of who was on that island, black and narrow it down from there. jeesh!

you might want to look up cargo cults.  tom navy isn't an actual person but several people.(u.s.navy personel)so when one of the tribesmen says he appeared at the same time at different locations that makes sense.

Tom Navy might be a generic term like G.I. Joe.  G.I. Joe is not ONE person, and so probably Tom Navy is probably a term that referenced the general sailor (and now the meaning lost).

why hasn't anyone looked in old NAvy records to find who may have been on the island then?

While it sounds simple to just "look up" the personnel on Tanna during world war II, there is a huge problem in doing so. Around 1973, 90% of the personnel records from world war II was destroyed in a fire at the national archives.

I'm not saying that is could not be done, but it would be an endeavor. I spent two years fighting with the national archives in order to prove that my grandfather fought during the war in order to get him the medals that he never recieved for his service.

There are after action reports, ship rosters, as well as other documents out there that would be useful for research. but it would take someone with a serious interest and alot of spare time to do so...

It may be possible that "Tom Navy" is still alive, hears about the show and steps forward.

I apologize in advance for any mispellings... Hope this was helpful to the discussion.

Tom Navy a enlightening spoof on prophets in general.... they will find metaphorically , as will we that Tom Navy is a personification of love which is man's highest purpose as professed by many religions. Tom Navy lies within all of us and it is our journey and interactions with others that manifest it.

What the Tanna people need now is some underwear and clothes.

Could "Tom Navy" actually be the same person as John Frum who also visited Tanna in WWII?

Just a note to gust #14652896.  Your comment shows how much we must learn about other societies. You go for the lowest observation you could muster, small mind and you are even smaller as a person.

originally posted #14552785 ... I had never heard of the cargo cults, but I get the impression after reading the wiki articles, it seems that "Tom Navy" is just one of many westerners that are being worshipped as gods. The "John Frum" movement being the most recognized.

I'm curious now to know the names of any other deities that spread the message of love and peace to the people of Tanna. Seems like it may have been a common occurance.

Again, I apoloigize for any mispellings and hope that this has added to the discussion.

I agree "Tom Navy" was probably a someone named "Tom" who told the tribesmen that he was in the "Navy" and because this was an oral history, it morphed over the years into "Tom Navy." In the recent TV show in the USA, the Tanna tribesmen met a WWII vet who told them "Tom Navy" was probably one of the "seabies" (spelling?) who came ashore first to help prepare the islands' terrain for landings during teh war.

the tv show also indicates that the Tanna people have Tom Navy's id medal, so why not start to search base in the number of that medal ?

They have what they consider clothes.  Why should they have to wear what you think they should?
Maybe they think you shouldn't be wearing so many clothes.  At least the Tannas won't force their ideas on others.

Tom Navy they speak of is more less of a figurehead of the US Navy. The Navy came to Tanna during WW2 &  gave them food, hope, and rules to live by to be sucessful.

Watching the all episodes of this show about the Tanna, the elder Chief distinctly remembers meeting "Tom Navy" as a child.  The chief was frail physically, but not mentally, so there may be a very real person behind the Tom Navy mythos.  But its been at least 60 years...

Finding the real identity of Tom Navy (and bringing him back) is the one of the main objectives of their trip to the USA and meeting Obama (who could help them in their Tom Navy quest).

By far the saddest moment of the series is when they talk to the homeless guy in central park NYNY.  To the Tanna, he is surrounded by shelter, but nobody loves him.  It just sad all round.
