Australia has perplexed history, The earliest recorded use of the word Australia in English was in 1625. The name Australia was popularised by the explorer Matthew Flinders, who pushed for it to be formally adopted as early as 1804. The beginning of the twentieth century saw the final result of nearly two decades of negotiations with regard to federation, with the approval of a federal constitution by all six Australian colonies and its subsequent ratification by the British parliament in 1900. This resulted in the creation of one federal Australian state as of 1 January 1901.

The Head of State of Australia is Queen Elizabeth II. Her representative in Australia is the Governor General, Quentin Bryce. The leader of the government is the Prime Minister who, in 2010, is Julia Gillard. You can get the list of all the rulers of Australia from rulers.org/ausgovt.html
