Isn't a boxing ring supposed to be round? If they don't want to change the shape, they should change the name to boxing square. Who came up with the idea to call it a boxing ring?

Because boxers used to fight in a circle drawn on the floor, called the ring. This name stuck On even after the boxing ring became a square....

I believe that originally boxing occurred in a circle painted or drawn on the ground. The boxers had to remain inside, and the spectators had to stay out side. When ropes where added (for safety) the obvious shape for them to be is a square, but by then the boxing community had called it a "ring" so long that the name stuck.
