Why shouldn’t I build sitewide links?

I wanted to build some sitewide links using blogrolls of friends but someone told me not to do. Any good reason for which I shouldn’t build sitewide links?

    The reason that's why you should'nt build sitewide links is, most of the time the sitewide links appears on the site has not related with the site content and they looks spammy.
