Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated substantially by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (January/February). It is celebrated not simply in places where the Tamil inhabitants constitutes a majority, but also in places where Tamil communities are worse, such as Singapore and Malaysia. The festival is also referred to as Thaipooyam or Thaippooyam. The word Thaipusam is derived from the month name Thai and Pusam, which refers to a star that is at its highest point during the festival. On the day of the festival, devotees will clip their chiefs and attempt a pilgrimage along a set way where including in various acts of devotion, notably sustaining various kinds of kavadi (burdens). At its simplest this may entail carrying a saucepan of milk, but mortification of the flesh by jabbing the skin, tongue or cheeks with vel skewers is also common. The only reason that I think is behind the shaving of head at Thaipusam is that they might think that it will purify them and as the heads are shaved their sins are also removed along with their hair and they become pure as they were at the time of their birth. This is the only reason that came in my mind for shaving head at Thaipusam by the Hindus. If I am wrong then someone please tell the real reason behind it so that I might be able to provide the right information next time.
