An experiment proposal is a formal application written by a scientist or student who wishes to conduct an experiment in a lab or other setting. The experiment proposal is similar to a business plan and tells the research facility why the experiment is necessary. Experiment proposals are also called research proposals or scientific proposals. Writing a clear and concise proposal will increase the chances of the experiment reaching actuality.

Write the introduction for the experiment. In the introduction, state an overview of the entire experiment from the reason for the experiment, what the experiment is designed to find or change and about how long it should take. You should also include personal information in the page above the introduction as a title page.

Expand on the reason for the experiment in the next section. List any problems that the experiment hopes to solve or what the overall purpose of the experiment is. Expand on the reasons given in the introduction.

Describe the process of the experiment in the next section. Outline how the experiment should work and what is involved in the process.

State the objectives for the experiment and any expected outcomes. This is where you write the hypothesis for the experiment and what you hope to achieve.

List the expected time frame for the experiment. This can be any time from just a few weeks to a period of several years.

Give a list of necessary tools, materials and supplies for the experiment. Outline how many people it will take to complete the experiment, or if test subjects are necessary. List if any human or animal test subjects are necessary and any labs or special equipment that the experiment needs.

Create a list of references and sources for the experiment, such as where you found the hypothesis, the data you used to come up with the experiment and any other sources that you used in creating the experiment and proposal. List any experts whom you interviewed.
