    Removing a center beam depends on many different thing; you must get the architect approval to carry the weight.  some people these days Instead of the steel I-beam use Microllam LVL.  

    Also your design should be strong enough to carry the load and it must be done to make sure it stands other factors.  since your question does not provide enough details i can only comment in a generic way.
