   Windows usually offers an Upgrade option that helps you to keep all of your files, settings and programs intact during the upgrade when upgrading from one version of Windows to another. Unfortunately, you can lose your data during upgrading from Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Professional Edition. You can upgrade your Windows Vista to Windows 7 through Custom Installation option, which removes all previous data from the hard drive during the upgrade. First, you need to back them up to preserve your files and settings before you upgrade the operating system.

   
   

   First you open your optical drive, and insert the Windows 7 installation disc in the DVD Rome drive. Setup will automatically appear on the screen to install Windows. Here you will press on "Install Now."
   
   Now press the button "Go online to get the latest updates for installation (recommended)" option. Here Windows will start downloading important Windows updates while installing the operating system on your system hard drive. It will prevent downloading and installing them after the installation.
   
   In next step you will read the term and condition and select the mark next to "I accept the license terms" and further click "Next." Then press on "Custom (Advanced)".
   
   Here you will choose the partition on your hard drive or hard drive that have the Windows Vista Ultimate operating system, and then go on "Next."
   
   In this step you will click "OK." For installation you have to give the computer name to make an initial user account. Now enter the appropriate information when prompted. Here you can use the same information as your Vista installation. After this step computer will then install Windows 7.  This is a time taking process and your system may take an hour or more depending on your system specs.
