I have Comcast HD box with DVR, VCR/DVD player/recorder combo and Yamaha HTR-5650 receiver.  The receiver does not have HDMI, but does have optical outputs (one for D/TV and one for DVD).  I want all programs to run in high definition and the ability to turn on the receiver to get surround sound for movies (from TV or DVD player), but don't need the surround sound for general TV watching.  How do I connect all of this up?

    Hi There,
This hookup will not let you record from the cable, but adding a coax cable from the RF output of the cable box (ch 3 usually) to the antenna input of the combo unit will do so.  Just use the internal tuner of the combo and tune to ch 3 or 4 and start recording.  If no RF output on the cable box, bring the analog audio/video to the A/V input of the combo using a three wire RCA patch cable and this will do the same thing. Then switch to the line input for recording.
