how can people protect the selves from volcanoes

   Umm...theres not much you can do if youre in the way of the flow of lava but hopefully you will be miles away from that. the most worrying thing would be the ash/soot/debris flying about. Stay inside away from windows. If possible shut and insulate windows and doors with damp towels/clothes to stop fine ash particles getting in. If youre outside get under cover as soon as possible & hold a damp rag or handkerchielf over your mouth and nose.  But always follow any advice from emergency services!
