i cannot get the volume to work when playing a dvd any suggestions?

I do not have any cable or satelite hooked up. But wanted to watch dvd but can't get any volume. Dvd plays. Just no volume. Can u help

    plug in the cables properly
    and make sure you have inserted all the cables
