Although a roof looks like just shingles, there are other materials used to keep your home free from leaks and your roof in good condition. A metal drip edge is one of those items. It is installed along the edge of the decking to prevent water from either blowing or wicking up under the shingles. It is very easy to install if you are comfortable with heights. Done from the roof, the time involved is not long,

    Step 1

Clean and sweep the roof decking if needed, removing all debris. Measure the lengths of drip edge needed for all outer edges of the roof.

    Step 2

Cut the lengths of drip edge with metal snips and take them all up on the roof to make the installation go quicker.

    Step 3

Lay the first piece starting on the front lower edge of the roof from one corner to the next, and nail it in. Use 1 1/4 galvanized roofing nails to attach the drip edge metal strip. To make a butt joint, overlap the drip edge ends and force the two pieces together. Complete the front and back lower edges of the roof.

    Step 4

Place the drip edge on the rake or sloping outer edges. The end of the drip edge must go over the end of the drip edge on the front edge and nail into place. Continue up and back down the rake or sloped edges until you go over the edge of the back lower edge. You are finished when the roof looks like it has been completely outlined in drip edge.

    hope it helps

The project is new roof over old clean roof.

Can I install Drip Edge under the existing roof before new re-roof?

    Thank you, Chuck
