   Sodium has 1 valence electron-
   
   Na.
   
   So when combinded to create soduim fluoride its an ionic bond like this-
   
   :F:N with two more on top and bottom of fluorine
   
   Giving both a noble gas configuration of 8 valence electrons in the outershell.
