   Downtown montreal is really a nice place to live.  Rent might be little expensive but other cost savings offset the expense. for example if you are living in downtown montreal you don't have to buy a car; everything is in walking distance.  the main core of downtown is also connected underground which really comes handy in cold winters.  if you live and work in downtown you can still wear slippers and walk to work in the underground city. I know some really good real estate agents who can help you find a place,let me know if you are interested.
