An archipelagic is a cluster or group of islands that were created naturally by Teutonic plate movement, volcano activity, etc. The Philippines in 1955 wrote a document to the United States government stating that they owned all of the waters around all of the islands making up the Philippines. This was a very crucial document. It's like owning a house, but not the land under or around the house. The Philippine government, very intelligently, wanted to own the land (sea) under and around their house.
