ISLAMABAD – Out of the total list of around 6,000 beneficiaries of National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), the number of the beneficiaries of National Accountability Bureau cases stood at around 300 and in that list of 300, the mainstream politicians are just 30.
The sources in the National Accountability Bureau informed TheNation that the list of the NRO beneficiaries of NAB cases was around 300 out of that total 6,000.
They further informed that National Accountability Bureau had already given the list of the NAB cases withdrawn under NRO to the Federal Law Ministry. They told that the main cases withdrawn under the NRO were of criminal nature and the major beneficiaries belonged to Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). It is pertinent to mention here that the Sindh Home Department officials confirmed that around 3,700 cases were withdrawn under the NRO and most of the cases were instituted on charges of criminal nature.
The sources in NAB further informed that around 300 under-investigation cases were also dropped due to promulgation of National Reconciliation Ordinance while NAB could not proceed with its functions as the annual grant for the bureau was slashed to one-third and in that meagre amount the bureau was hardly managing its salaries and general functioning and no amount was available for investigation. The sources further informed that NAB was passing through highly uncertain times as there was not support from the government, which was h**l bent to wind it up. The major question in these circumstances is how without any funds at its disposal National Accountability Bureau could tackle the cases if the benefit of NRO was withdrawn.
The list of NRO beneficiaries which has been sent to Prime Minister Secretariat include the names of President Asif Ali Zardari, Begum Nusrat Bhutto, Jahangir Badr, Rehman Malik, former federal minister for food Nawab Yousuf Talpur, former Chairman Agriculture Research Council Badar-ud-Din Zahidi, former federal secretary, AR Siddiqui, former trade secretary Aslam Hayat Qureshi, former secretary Suleman Farooqi, former secretary Javed Tallat, former Chairman CBR, AR Siddiqui, Begum Fouzia Gilani, wife of Prime Minister, Defence Minister Ch Mukhtar Ahmad, former minister for local bodies, Malik Mushtaq Awan, Agha Seraj Durrani, former MNA, Rana Nazir Ahmad, former MPA, Tariq Anees and former advisor to Chief Minister Punjab, Mian Muhammad Rashid.
