    Hi There,
    I would go over the entire wood area with paint stripper.
    This piece sounds like it had a lacquer finish and it sounds like you have sanded that off, but still use the paint stripper.
    And you may need to spray some colored lacquer back on as its possible the wood will not accept a dark stain (some wood doesn't, and its highly likely this wood won't).
    But do your stripping then try the stain and get back to me if that happens.
