   Hi,
   The 2009 Victorian Hunting Guide put out by the Department of Sustainability and Environment is a useful free booklet to have. It covers hunting of feral animals on page 36 and places to hunt generally for the next few pages. I suggest you get a copy , but basically contact the DSE office nearest the area you want to hunt in and keep copies of all correspondence and then hunt out of deer season .I reckon you could not be charged with illegal deer hunting if you are not found with venison or any deer parts in your possession.But put this question to the DSE people just to be sure. Having said that 30.06 is kind of a large calibre to be hunting the feral animals usually found in Vic.
   
   Edit... Heading north to NSW and Qld to hunt pigs and goats or even to NT to hunt buffalo ? Yep 30.06 would be the right calibre. On a trip to western NSW in April this year i saw lots of feral goats , but my rifle is just a .22 so no goat shooting for me.
   
   Edit Up in western NSW and Qld where I go once or twice a year , the ranges are longer so it is very different to Vic forest hunting , so although the 30.06 is kinda over the top for Vic , it is fine in the flat wide spaces up there. I haven't shot with a 30.06 but I have used other guys .303 which is a little less powerful , but then I am not a big person but could still shoot twenty to thirty rounds in an afternoon easily (mostly at targets) If you get seriously into shooting you can start reloading your ammo and so get better accuracy as well as being able to make special loads such as lower powered loads with perhaps a 125g bullet for small game right up to full power loads with a 220g fully jacketed bullet for buffalo.
