My question is regarding the system of slavery. What I know about slavery is that it was a system under which people are treated as property, forced to work, kept against their will from the time of their capture, purchase or birth and also deprived of the right to leave or to refuse to work as well as demand for compensation. I want to know about what were the northern thoughts on slavery?

The entire concept of slavery in America, in the 18th and 19th century can be found in different fictional writings. I recently read the novel written by Margret Mitchell, titled “Gone with the Wind”. This novel narrates the events of South American life, and times, when slavery was a common practice in Southern America. Negro slaves were the property of White rich Southerners. They were the masters of their Negro slaves, who tended and cultivated their massive and large cotton plantations. Slavery for the Southern Americans was a way of living; they considered it to be a divinely ordained social system, where blacks needed to be mastered, as they were intellectually and physically incapable of taking care of themselves. This social system, where half of the population worked as slaves for the comfort of the other half, was an alien concept for the North Americans. When for the first Abraham Lincoln paid a visit to Southern confederacy, he was appalled by their social practice. After becoming the president of America, he launched a full fledge war against South, as it was not willing to give up slavery. This war was won by North Americans, hence freeing the Negroes from the clutches of slavery.
