    Hi,
Although there is no doubt that the reason for pursuing an online course for most comes from a career ambition, for some the entire reason for enrolling on a distance learning course will be for the challenge the syllabus provides.

Education is the obvious option for those who want to improve upon their skill-set for their current role, or gain the necessary qualifications for a more senior position education is important to achieve these goals. Although plenty of people study for personal growth. People can enrichen their lives by studying something they’re really interested in.

Education can increase your earning potential and career options. Generally speaking, the level and quality of education you obtain is related to the salary and the range of career options available to you. According to the Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Labor, the median annual income in 2008 for employees with a high school diploma was $23,000; for an associate's degree $29,000; and for a bachelor's degree the average salary $39,000. Over a lifetime, the gap in earning potential between high school graduates and those holding a bachelor's degree or higher exceeds $1 million, according to the College Board.

There is also increasing demand for an educated workforce. According to, back2college.com, "Statistics project that 75 percent of future positions are expected to require at least some type of certification or licensure, and professions that require a bachelor's degree are projected to grow nearly twice as fast as the national average, making a college degree a good investment."

Karlen MacKay, senior vice president at Spherion Human Capital Consulting Group says that according to the United States Department of Labor: "By the year 2006, 50 percent of the U.S. workforce will be over age 50. This is the workforce that was rewarded for stability. They're the one's who have to learn to be resilient”. She adds, "old dogs do learn new tricks."

So educating yourself gives you a good chance of earning more, and will give you more opportunities moving forward. I'd say another benefit is the mental stimulation that learning provides, and the satisfaction of gaining more knowledge
