Diwali is a religious day that has great importance for both Hindus and Sikhs as well.  Friends and neighbors exchange sweets on the day is a very popular custom of the event. One cannot imagine Diwali without sweets and savories that are specially made at home.  Other than sweet dishes, there are several other recipes that are made on the occasion of Diwali such as  Dahi-bhalle and Ghathiya. The Diwali cuisines also depend upon the family traditions and culture which vary from north to south and east to west India. Here is the list of dishes which are commonly cooked at home during Diwali:

    Badam Phirni

    Gulab Jamun

    Besan Ke Ladoo

    Jalebi

    Rasmalai

    Channar Payesh

    Karanji

    Rawa Ladoo

    Doodh Pak

    Kesar Kaju Barfi

    Shakkarpare

    Gajar Ka Halwa

    Kheer

    Ghathia

    Lapsi

You can cook any of sweet dish from the list. I hope your friend will love to eat it.

On the date of diwali in 1619 sixth guru, Guru Hargobind Ji was released from the Gwalior Fort prison. 52 other princes were also released on the same date as well. The day is also known as "Bandi Chorr Devas". Sikhs celebrates the day by lighting the Golden Temple and this tradition of celebration of the return of Guru Hargobind continues till now.

Another important Sikh event which is associated with Diwali is the martyrdom of the elderly Sikh strategist Bhai Mani Singh in 1737. Bhai Mani Singh was the Granthi (known as keeper/reader of Sikh scripture) of Harmandir Sahib. It is popularly known as the Golden Temple. He, in 1704, wrote the final version of Guru Granth Sahib dictated by Guru Gobind Singh to him.
