There is a story behind this Holi festival according to the Hindu tradition and that story goes like:

In Vaishnavism, Hiranyakashipu is the great king of demons, and he had been bestowed a boon by Brahma, which organized it close to despairing for him to be killed. The boon was due to his prolonged penance, later which he had appealed that he not be slaughtered "during day or night; interior the home or into the open, not on earth or in the sky; neither by a man nor an animal; neither by astra nor by shastra". Consequently, he grew arrogant and criticized the Heavens and the Earth. He appealed that population finish worshipping Gods and commences praising him.

Despite this, Hiranyakashipu's have son, Prahlada, was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. In spite of some threats from Hiranyakashipu, Prahlada continued offering prayers to Lord Vishnu. He was poisoned but the poison turned to nectar in his mouth. He was lucid to be flattened by elephants yet stayed unharmed. He was left in a room with voracious, poisonous snakes and survived. All of Hiranyakashipu's tackles to kill his son failed. Finally, he lucid young Prahlada to roost a pyre on the lap of his demoness sister, Holika, any person who could not die because she also had a boon which would prevent discharge from firing her. Prahlada readily recognised his father's orders, and prayed to Vishnu to save him safe. When the discharge commenced, all watched in amazement as Holika burnt to death, where Prahlada survived unharmed, the firing of Holika is celebrated as Holi.
