I would like to know from where the name boxing day came. I have asked a few colleagues but they do not know about the history of this day. I have an assignment to write on the history of this day. Can someone here tell me the history of this day and also the reason why it is called boxing day. I would be glad if you can help. Thanks for time

Boxing Day is a bank or public holiday that happens on 26 December, or the first or second weekday after Day, counting on nationwide or local laws. It is discerned in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and some other Commonwealth nations. In Ireland, it is identified as St Stephen's Day or the Day of the Wren (Irish: Lá an Dreoilín). In South Africa, Boxing Day was renamed Day of Goodwill in 1994. Historically, it was commemorated as The Second Day of Christmas (2. Weihnachtsfeiertag) in former East Germany.
In the UK, it is a habit for tradesmen to pick up "Christmas boxes" of cash or gifts on the first weekday after Christmas as thank you for good service during the year. This is referred in Samuel Pepys' diary entrance for 19 December 1663. This custom is associated to an old English tradition: within exchange for ensuring that wealthy landowners' Christmases operated smoothly, their servants were licensed towards rob the 26th off to trip their families. The employers provided each servant a container consisting gifts and bonuses (and occasionally leftover food). I think the name of this day refer to the Christmas boxes which contain the presents or money to help the poor people. I hope I have give the best answer on this. Best of luck
