why do people fire gun shots on new year's day?

There are many other ways to celebrate any festivals. I don�t know why people fire gun shots on new year's day. Is this right thing to do?

    According to the historic traditions, making loud noises like a gunshot has been done since the 14th century. Origins of firing shots in the air  comes from an ancient German tradition to ward off the winter spirits and rejuvinate the spirits of spring time.
