    The roads are often four (or more) lane superhighways now, as opposed to the dirt roads, gravel roads, or cobblestone streets of yesteryear. It is safer for vehicles to travel at higher speeds.
    It is also very unsafe for motor vehicles to travel at the outrageous speeds at which some of them travel.

    A hundred years ago, there were many more horse-drawn vehicles than motor vehicles on the road. Drivers of motor vehicles were expected to go slowly when they were near horses, in order to avoid frightening them.
    In some places, motor vehicles were required to come to a stop and shut off the engine until a horse had passed them safely.

    m rusty on this one but origanly there was no speed limits even when the first motorways were built

    but then small villages started posting there own speed limits of 20mph and the aa were the ones who helped enforce this

    i think then with the number of fatal crashes on motorways the goverment stepped in and reconized the need for a speed limit and was set there and then

    i cant remember much but if i do i will post it for you but at least this might get you started ..

    its because the governmoent realised how many crashes happened and they stepped in and introduced the speed law of 40 mph xxxxx

    Many cars were slow and most drivers had to go slower as there were still many horses around, and the cars were very expensive so only a few people managed to afford them, as it was a new invention, which made the speed limit slower, to get people used to cars. The pavements and roads weren't also that good, as they didn't have smooth pavements like we do today. Then with villiages and towns, the drivers needed to keep the speed down constantly as it prevented less accidents and damage if the speed limits were low, it started off at around 2mph around cities, towns etc
    There were also different types of vechicles coming out, some faster than others, which is why they changed some vechiles to around 8mph, as they went faster anyway, it depended on the type of minium and maxium speed of the cars, which mattered to allowing the speed to go up or down.
