    I believe the style is called "Purple Prose."


    I'm not sure which Hawthorne piece you mean, but the "original" phrase "It was a dark and stormy night" is attributed to Baron Edward Bulwer-Lytton who used it as the opening phrase in his novel entitled "Paul Clifford".
