According to dictionary.com an allegory is a symbolic narrative, a representation of abstract or spiritual concepts into easier to digest and more concrete ideas such as stories. Given this definition, The Alchemist is most definitely an allegory. The basic premise of the book is that when you want something with everything you have the Universe will bend to your will and help you achieve it.

This idea is emphasized throughout Santiago's journey. It is arguably one of the most important life lessons one can adhere to as it has helped people achieve what was believed to be impossible since the dawn of modern man.
