i found two van neste prints at home..   at least i think they're prints, signed by the artist.
both in good condition, framed:
one is a street with a church in the background, and people using a cart.
the other is a street with an arch in the background, and a lady carrying a basket in the foreground.
any idea if they are worth anything? any info at all?

    Elayne, you mention knowing Van Neste and his being a family friend.  I am curious to know about the historyof his prints during the 1940's.  Where did he live during that time.  It seems there are  prints of his marked "afte" Van Neste, which is a post reproduction copy.  My print is actually derived from what seems to be an original plate but isn't a signed and numbered copy.  Its backed by a newspaper that seems to be from 1944 New York Times, making this more fascinating since I wonder what affect the war and occupation had on his art work, and how prints were being distributed.  The framer of my print was E.J.S. Manufacturing Company in New York, who seems to have produced several Van Neste prints in this way.  I have seen such "afte" prints on auction sites, etc.  So, my curiousity is piqued.

    Alfred Joseph Van Neste is Belgian (1874-1969)


    Painter of urban landscapes, painter in watercolours, engraver, illustrator, poster artist

    He was the nephew of Florimond Van Acker (1858-1940) and was his pupil. He was also a pupil of Acadamies of the Art schools of Bruges and Antwerp. He became professor with the ' Academies of Antwerp and Brussels.

    He painted picturesque sites of Bruges and Antwerp. He also worked in Venice and in Brittany. He created also posters and models for processions and processions history

    He became the most significant from Antwerp poster artist and carried out also stamps, cosrumes and illustrations of books. He illustrated the book " De Leeuw van Vlaanderen " of Henri Conscience (1912 Antwerp)

    I just bought a Van Neste print/watercolor at a thrift shop. It's signed 'afte Van Neste' but isn't dated. Can anyone give me more information about this artist?

    I have the same two prints that came from my mother's home.  They are framed too. I have no idea of the value.  Did you ever find out a value?
