Although he is arguably the biggest name to ever grace the Bollywood screen, times were not always peachy for the Big B. Amitabh first received interest for his voice rather than his appearance as the tall and thin actor was not the typical heartthrob. Producers, directors and fans alike took some time to acquire a taste for Bachchan. This is further evidenced by the fact that his first handful of films were flops or moderately successful.
He persisted and it paid off as he dominated the 70's and 80's and carried that momentum into the 90's. Where he then decided to take a stab at politics, something he decided was not for him at that time. This revelation was met with a fair deal of criticism and questions, another rough patch for the most popular man in India.
His return to films was rather unceremonious. This was further compounded by the fact that his production studio nearly went bankrupt thanks to less than stellar investments and film returns. This marked another low - financially and in terms of reputation for the living legend.
As in the past, Bachchan seemed to rise above and beyond these troubles thanks to hard work, persistence and an acceptance that his role in films had to change in order for him to thrive. This included films such as Mohabbatein, Kaante, Veer-Zaara, and Black.
All in all, there have been the highest of highs and very low lows for Mr. Bachchan. He continued to believe in himself and his skills and turned these trials into victories.
