Several government and health organizations have categorized beans as a vegetable in different dietary recommendations. Beans are also classified as a vegetable by food experts and horticulturalists.

Many types of beans, such as kidney beans, black beans and pinto beans, fit into two food catagorial groups because they have a nutrient profile similar to other foods in both the Vegetable Group and the Meat & Beans Group. as beans provides fiber, folate, potassium and antioxidants and they are plant based so thus they fall in the Vegetable Group. Similarly as beans provide protein and nutrients such as iron,  they are also in the Meat & Beans Group. beans provide a low-fat, saturated-fat-free and cholesterol free source of protein unlike some other foods in the Meat & Beans group.
