I really like having sea food and I make sure that I have it atleast once a week. I have a habit of trying different cuisines when it comes to sea food in particular and I often bring cans of sardines whenever I go to the grocery shop. Being so much interested in sea food I have come across one question that I would want to be answered. The knowledge I have about herrings and sardines make me feel that they both are very much the same. So I would like to confirm if sardines are actually baby herrings.

There is certainly not much to choose between sardines and herring. As far as the meaning is concerned, "sardine" means "small fish. Usually when they are young and small, they are called sardines. By the time they get older and bigger, they are called herring. For a number of years, herring have been a major diet of northern Europeans - Scandinavians, Russians, Dutch, British and Germans.
