Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors(SSRIs), such as flouxetine and Sertraline reduce depression by increasing the levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter. Some clinicians suggest SSRIs in order to treat dysthymic disorder. Anxiety, Diarrhea, Drowsiness, Headache, Sweating, Nausea, poor sexual functioning and insomnia are also the result of possible side effects of the SSRIs. A recent type of study shows the generation of drugs in the increased patients. Tricycle antidepressants TCA’s are less expensive than SSRIs, as they have severe side effects which include persistent dry mouth, sedation, dizziness and cardiac arrhythmias. Because of the side effects, caution is taken when prescribing to TCA’s to the elderly patients. TCA’s include amitriptline, Imipramine and Nortriptyline. There is a 10 day supply of TCAs that can also be lethal if ingested all at once, so these types of drugs might not be preferred as a treatment option for the patients A 10-day supply of TCAs can be lethal if it is taken all at once, so these drugs may not be a preferred treatment option for patients who are at risk of suicide. Heterocyclics include bupropion and trazodone. Bupropion is now prescribed to the patients with a seizure disorder. Some of the side effects include agitation, anxiety, confusion, tremor, dry mouth, fast or irregular heartbeat, headache, low blood pressure and insomnia.
