Camera turns on and shuts off constantly

When I turn on camera the front moves out and goes back in constantly.  I may get a picture before it closes but not always.  Drains battery quickly opening and closing.  I have removed the lithium battery and put back in to get it working again because it shuts down or locks up.  Reset date and does it again.  I love this camera because it has the 12X zoom.  Will it be worth fixing?  Paid over 600 for it.
