Why did cars become the dominant form of transportation in the United States?

Cars are a relatively recent phenomenon. They've been around for only a little more than a century, yet they've made a huge impact on U.S. culture. How did the car become so important in American life?

what do you mean how? give me one reason why a car wouldn't be popular? fuel was cheap, they weren't that expensive, you have privacy and the advantage of not having to depend on a public mean of transportation (which comes with having to be right on time, which is irritating).. a car is 'the magical carpet of the human being'. it is an example of the power we have as beings on this planet. the device it itself is phenomenal.
