Cost of mri scan in Canada varies from province to province and in lots of cases so does the waiting period.  For example there are lots of people living in Ontario
who go to Quebec to get their mri scan just so they can beat the lineups and pay a private clinic and get the scan done.  When dealing with private clinics
the government health plan does not cover the cost and you would have to pay it yourself.

Lots of people ask if MRI is safe? how safe is mri depends on your health condition for example If you have an implanted heart pacemaker you should not have an MRI exam. In most cases, metal objects used in orthopaedic surgery pose no risk.

Anyhow keeping on topic in terms of mri scan cost; the true cost depends on what part of the body is being scanned but Most MRI scans cost $875. Complex examinations and scans requiring injection of contrast material are more expensive and will also depend on clinic to clinic.

but once again the average cost is around $875 Canadian dollars.

Your points regarding limited access from province to province & increased waiting lists for MRI's is very topical.  As cuts continue to be made to the health care system, inevitably the wait lists will continue to grow, putting patients in the position of seeking out alternate options.

Here in B.C. the wait-lists have increased by as much as 30% and in some areas of the province, the wait-list for an MRI can be 18 months to 3 years long.  As a result, patients are looking to private MRI clinics as the solution to this proposed delay in their diagnosis and subsequent treatment.

You're absolutely correct that the cost of an MRI can depend on a number of variables such as the area to be scanned, whether contrast will be involved, whether it is a screening protocol, etc.  To help answer your question I have provided a link that details the rates for MRI scans at a clinic in Vancouver, BC...you may find this to be a helpful resource.  http://www.canmagnetic.com/scans-rates/

From a safety perspective, MRI is far safer than X Ray or CT scans because it doesn’t expose the patient to any ionizing radiation. The examination is pain-free and does not require any special preparations.  While MRI is a safe and painless diagnostic procedure that can be performed on almost any patient, there are a few conditions which would prevent a patient from having an MRI scan.  http://www.canmagnetic.com/patient-info/

Thank you for bringing attention to this issue, I am sure your comments will be of great value to many.
