During 1996, BMW owned by the Rover Group, and at that time they were making a new car that would replace their existing Rover 200 and 400 collections, named Project R30, developed collectively with Project R50 and R40, that would become, respectively, the New Mini and the Rover 75. The recent model, which would have been called as the Rover 55, was decide to be manufactured in the Long bridge plant along with the New Mini, and BMW were granted a £152 million subsidy by the British government to refurbish the plant. During the year 2000, development was near to completion, but after BMW sold the Rover Group, the project's rights were transferred and delivered to the BMW, which alter their plan by stopping the project and kept the only working prototype in their headquarters at Munich. Although BMW tried to sell the project's rights, first to MG Rover and later to a number of Chinese car manufacturers companies, but the model never entered production. During this time period it has been rumored that the Rover R30 was finished by BMW and modified into the BMW 1-Series. Although, BMW have declared that the 1-Series is unrelated to the R30, and was prepared along with the new range of E90 3-Series.
