Do genes play a role in getting your period?

I'm just curious, because I was wondering if the time you get your period depends on your genes, or your own body. My mom's life style when she was my age is very different to mine. She used to be very athletic and skinny. I'm... pretty much the oposite! She ended up getting her period at about 14 or 15- very late! My opinion is that it depends on your body, but I'm not sure. Any help?
