The federal government remains concerned for eight Australians still unaccounted for in disaster-struck Japan. Australians in Japan were told to leave Tokyo, amid the worsening crisis at the power plant and the threat of aftershocks. Australian officials are searching morgues, hospitals and emergency shelters for 55 Australians still missing in devastated Japan.
Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd repeated the government's advice that Australians whose presence in Japan was not essential should leave the country if they could.
