The earnings data is published in the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (December 2010) and covers the average pay for full-time workers, covering nearly 300 trades and professions.

The data is drawn from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and Pay As You Earn (PAYE) records.

Big business bosses have received the third highest paycut in the last year but they remain Britian's highest paid employees, according to government statistics.

Directors and chief executives of major organisations have taken a paycut of nearly 14% bringing their average wage to £96,202 a year according to the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings.

The data compiled by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that the average annual salary for full time employees has grown by just 0.3% to £25,900 from £25,800 in 2009.

The increase of just £100 a year in the average salary is disappointing after the average wage increased by 2.6% last year.

The Office for National Statistics said public sector workers enjoyed average rises of up to 3% to £554 a week in 2010. This is up from £538 in 2009 and brings the average median gross annual salary for public sector employees to £28,808.

Workers in the private sector also enjoyed a rise of £473 a week, up from £464 in 2009. This is an enormous improvement on the 0.8% growth in private sector salaries which was recorded last year from 2008.

The average salary has risen by just 0.3% to £25,900 up from £25,800 where the wage for full-time employees rose by 2.6%.

The occupation which saw the biggest rise in pay, according to the ONS ranking, were authors and writers , with a 15.2% rise to £25,522 per year.

Speech and language therapists also saw a rise of 13.1% bringing their average wage packet to £25,964. Trading standard and factory inspectors saw a rise of 12.2% bringing their average salary to £33,171, while tour guides received a 12% rise to £6,255.

Directors and chief executives of major organizations remained the best paid job in Britain with an average annual salary of £96,202, down from £115,576 in 2009, according to the figures.

The second best paid job, according the list, goes to corporate managers and senior officials who earn on average £70,000 per year, a decrease of 7.9% from 2009.

While the third placed position goes to medical practitioners who've seen a rise of 4.1% in the last year bringing their average annual salary to £69,989 in 2010. This is up from 2009 where they saw a drop of 4.9% with the average salary coming in at £78,366.

The title of worst paid job on the ONS ranking goes to school mid-day assistants, despite receiving an annual payrise of 2.2%, they earn on average £2,177 a year. This figure is low due to the amount of hours worked compared to other full time jobs.

Last year when This is Money analysed the ONS data, senior workers in local government saw a pay rise of nearly 20%. This year, however, the number was left out. The ONS said that figures which have an 'X' next to in the data are due to inconsistencies in their research – therefore they're unable to publish a reliable figure.
