How can Scotland qualify for the 2010 World Cup?

   With the Netherlands already qualified from Group Nine, Scotland must finish in second place in Group Nine and end up with more points than one of the other second placed nations from the other eight groups.
   
   For this to happen, Scotland must beat the Netherlands on Wednesday and then hope Northern Ireland fail to beat Slovakia and that Slovenia draw with Poland.  If this were to happen Scotland would secure one of the eight playoff spots in light of the fact that no one in Group Three could finish in second place with more than 12 points.
   
   There are nine groups altogether, but only eight playoff spots available. The second placed teams with the most points will gain the playoff spots, however, in all except Group Nine there are six times and so in all groups, apart from in Group Nine, the second  placed team will have the points gained against the bottom placed team discounted.
   
   As it stands Scotland are currently placed sixth in the table as most teams in second placed in the other group will have six points deducted at the final count.
   
   If Scotland do win against Holland then the only way that they would miss out on a play-off spot is if Northern Ireland, Poland or Slovenia won all their remaining games, and this is very unlikely.
   
   However, beating Holland is no easy task and the Dutch will be looking to keep hold of their 100% record in qualifying.
