Many Owners of old cars and trucks want to convert 6-volt electrical systems of their vehicles to 12 volts. It is very easy to convert to 12 volts. You can install a 12-volt alternator and regulator from any wrecking yard. You can replace the battery, all the light bulbs, the windshield wiper motor, and the ignition coil. The 6v-starter motor usually works smoothly on 12 volts. The problem is what to do with the stock 6-volt gauges and radio? Often it's desirable to retain these items and drop the 12 volts down to 6 volts to run them. Using a resistor is one of the most common way of reducing voltage of any vehicle. A resistor create voltage by an amount proportional to the value of the resistor (in Ohms) times the current flow through the resistor. The formula (Ohms law) is: V = I x R, where V is the voltage dropped across the resistor, I is the current through the resistor in amps and R is the value of the resistor in ohms. There are quite a few solid-state voltage regulators available in the market that can be used to automotive use. 7806 is the simplest, a regulator with 6 volt, 1 amp. During conversion of voltage for your automobile check the following:
