As Nehru's own political and economic philosophy disassociated him from both sides in the cold war, his chief foreign policy was nonalignment. He also outlined the diplomatic policy of 'panchshila' ("five principle"), which called for the signing of noninterference pacts between states as a means of preventing the intrusion by one state into the internal affairs of another.
