I think that this is an extremely interesting question and one that will certainly have people on both ends of the debate. In my opinion, the 4 goals of physcology: to describe, explain, predict, and change behavior can most certainly help people in need, and has over the course of time. The 4 goals help properly trained individuals assess, analyse and help people discover things about themselves that move them towards living more positive and rewarding lives. Our minds are the most valuable gift we have and a sick mind requires wonderful treatment.

However, in improperly trained hands, the four goals can poke, prod and render people worse off. Questions, examinations and more extreme phychological examination can make people break down, doubt themselves and even cause long term harm. Although rare, hurting definitely can happen.

    Hi,
The "father of modern psychology", Wilhelm Wundt, in 1911 stated: "The soul can no longer exist in the face of our present day physiological knowledge." His experimental psychology has done far more to help oppressive governments control the people than it has done to heal individuals of their maladies. He theorized that all man is consists of the flesh, blood and bones of his body, and all things being physiological then the behavior of man is controlled by the physiology. Some of the more horrifying experiments that came from this "science" are the, Milgram experiment, the Asch conformity experiment and numerous other mind control experiments that have helped terrorists recruit and brainwash, have helped demigods create cult churches that control their adherents, and governments reign in the rights of the people.

All that and still no luck in finding any actual physical originator of depression, manic behavior, insanity. In spite of that they continue to add new "diseases" to their magic book of maladies and even use scientific sounding phrases for their incantations. " You have ADHD which is a chemical imbalance that only this little pink pill can correct." "But Dr, what chemical is imbalanced?" The patient responds. The psychologist stammers; "Excuse me?" "Which chemical is it that has lost it's balance?" The psychologist smiles nervously and answers; "We haven't any test at this date that can identify the chemical, but don't worry, there is plenty of evidence that there is indeed a chemical imbalance." The patient looks confused. "Shouldn't you maybe do a C.A.T. scan or an MRI?" "These tests are very costly and have proven ineffective in identifying the source of chemical imbalances." The patient is suffering from cognitive dissonance as he discovers that the Doctor whom he thought was a scientist was perhaps nothing more than a charlatan. It is hard to grasp ideas that suggest what you believed to be true is in fact false. He didn't want to believe it, so he asked one more time; "An EEG?" The psychologist, not unaware of his dilemma and equally aware of the effects of authority and obedience to authority, so he pulled his glasses down his nose so that the upper part of the frame bisected his eyesight and it was uncertain if he was looking at the patient from above his glasses or through the top part of his glasses but however he was looking at the patient its effect was intimidating and the psychologist says; "Of course, before subscribing to any medication, it is prudent to seek out a second opinion, but I assure you the results will be the same and you undeniably have ADHD. If you want to overcome the problems you admitted to having you first have to be willing to let go of those problems. Are you willing to get better?" The poor patient doesn't know what to say or do. In his heart...in his soul, he knows his problems with concentrating on boring tasks or lessons his not an illness, he's always been pretty damned sure he had a hard time concentrating because the concentration level required was to low of a gradient. He's always been pretty damned sure that conformity is for cows. Then again he's come to know in painful ways that non-conformity attracts trouble.
