   Betty Ford is such an ordinary name and ordinary is how the former first lady whose title is now an iconic emblem for those retrieving from alcoholic beverage and pharmaceutical addiction considered of herself.
   
   But Ford, who passed away at the age of 93 on Friday at her dwelling in Palm Springs, Calif., was far from ordinary.    She openly discussed her bout with breast cancer, and in so managing, motivated thousands of American women to agenda mammograms. She highly ranked abortion privileges, conveyed acceptance of premarital s*x and shoved for the route of the ill-fated Equal Rights Amendment. But her most lasting legacy would come after she left the White House.
   
   After her husband’s election loss to Jimmy Carter, she descended into alcoholism and drug addiction. Through the intervention of her family and associates, she searched help. Her achievement in battling addiction was the spark for the establishment of the renowned live-in remedy program for alcoholics and pharmaceutical abusers. Since its inception in 1982, the Betty Ford Center’s beginning has treated more than 90,000 people including such A-list celebrities as Elizabeth Taylor and most recently Charlie Sheen.
   
   She will be buried next to her husband in Grand Rapids, Mich. this week as the nation memorializes her exceptional life.
