    How often to wash your dog depends largely on the type of dog you have, your dog's level of strenuous or messy activity as well as personal preference as an owner. The type of dog is important as white dogs as well as those with long and thick coats usually require more frequent bathing to remain clean looking and smelling. If your dog spends a lot of time indoors and rarely does a lot of exercise, it will require less washing than a dog that runs everyday and spends time in the woods. 

   
   

   The basic rule of thumb is for a dog to be bathed as often as once a week and at least once a month. Washing a dog more frequently than once a week can lead to the drying of their skin and coat. Be sure to use a dog specific shampoo for your German Sheppard and wash him at least once a month.
