Your operating system registry is one of the most important components of your Windows. The registry is that where operating system stores all of your computer's device , file associations and critical information about drivers, directories, Windows applications etc.Yes it is very true. When the registry of your operating system has error, it creates lot of frustrating issues like your computer boot up so slowly , switching between programs take lot of time and it show same response when you are shutting your system. It also takes unnecessary space in the registry and can prevent components from working at their best level. If your registry entry has an error in it, that program will then experience errors. If you want to clean Windows XP's registry, then follow these steps:
1) Open the Start menu, then click run.
2) Type "regedit" into the Run box and hit "Enter."
3) By doing this, you will see different section like HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_USERS and HKEY_CURRENT CONFIG. Each section contains a different set of entries related to different aspects of Windows XP operation.
4) When you click on one of the plus-signs (+) next to one of the root directories, it show you a more directories to choose from, and will make it easier for you to find entries you need to clean the registry.
5) Delete entries in the registry that you think are causing errors. You can do this simply by the use of "Delete" key, or you can also delete it with the help of mouse by choosing "Delete entry” .
6) Download good and reliable software of cleaning from internet.
7) Last step of the process to clean your boot records by changing which programs load them at startup. Click through both the LOCAL_MACHINE and CURRENT_USER directories until you reach Software/Microsoft/Windows/Run and RunOnce. By following these steps you can clean out registry entries that are causing certain programs to run on startup.
