Yes you are right. When the registry of your operating system has error, it creates lot of frustrating issues like your computer boot up so slowly , switching between programs take lot of time and  it show same response when you are shutting your system. It also takes unnecessary space in the registry and can prevent components from working at their best level. The best possible way to clean up registry errors is to remove those files that contain them. Here is a solution via which you can fix registry errors:

    1) First you have to use the "System Restore" feature of Windows XP as you told im currently using that window. Back up your system’s registry in order to prevent your computer from more to get wrong   while removing the registry errors. For backup creation you have to go first to the "Start" menu and "Run," then enter this  "%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe" into the "Run" box and click "OK” for further proceedings.

    2) Your next step would be to select "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen of the "Welcome to System Restore" window and click "Next." After doing this, enter any name for the reorganization at the restore point and click "Create."

    3) Download any free registry cleaner to your computer that are compatible with Windows XP.

    4) After downloading a free registry cleaner, open an icon that has the name of the program you downloaded. When the setup wizard for the program launches, follow the screens to install.

    5) Open the registry cleaner. Go to "Scan" or "Full Scan" options it’s up to you on the main page of the registry cleaner. Press the "Scan Now" button to start the process. The registry cleaner scans the entire registry of your Windows XP system and listed errors which it finds in the whole disk.

    6) "Delete “all the files indicated by cleaner. It removes all of the files with errors from your computer and makes your PC a faster one
