I just got one today and had the same problem. Removing battery for a minute didn't work but leaving it out 30 minutes did.  It gave me a failed update msg before the crash.  Now it has done it again, while I was trying to reconnect through MapQuest on my PC.  I have the battery out again.  I sure hope it doesn't do this while I'm flying.

(cont'd) This sucks.  Today I got the plane loaded fueled and running, then I couldn't get the 696 to boot up. Wasted an entire day (someone else's vacation time, too) and the end result is I'm shipping the unit back to Garmin.  With the several hours spent trying to get the GPS to work my time window for leaving passed so now I have scrapped a vacation.  The first problem I had was that initial update which failed.

Garmin would not ship a new unit until they received and verified my defective Garmin 696.  They did not cover shipping, which totalled about $100.  They don't cover for XMradio transfer fee of $15 and wouldn't allow me to keep my already-activated XM antennae to avoid this.  They don't cover for the unusable 2-3 weeks paid XM service while they had exchganged my unit, either.  I have not been able to use the 696 yet.  I HAVE been able to fly with paper and a Lowrance Airmap in the meantime.
