Identifying Edible Bugs

How can I tell if a bug is edible? You may see a wasp, but entomophagists see pine nuts. What if you were lost and alone in the wild? Imagine that you have no experience hunting and there's no river to fish. What if your only food source was crawling underfoot? That's right -- bugs. It may not be a gourmand's preference, but now isn't the time to get picky -- it's a matter of life or death. How do you know if its good to eat or not?

if it is colorfull leave it alone, if the legs are a bright yellow, red, orange, green or blue just say no.  If it is just walking along paying no attention to danger it usally means it has nothing to fear because its poisonous.  If your lost in the tropics leave most bugs alone because they are most likely dangerous.

Most beatles are not tasty, they give off a nasty smell when eaten.  Most or all grasshoppers you can eat, crickets just be careful of the big black ones they might bite.  Mealworms or superworms are very tasty and good for you, more protien and fat then most meat and poultry.  Larva in wood or underground are a good choice very squishy when eating.  Ants if you can find a good supply only ants that don't seem to protect themselve when being bothered, ones that do defend themselves have a tendensy to taste bad or it would be worth the fight.  Termites if you find a good mound that should do you well.  But if your lost Up North during winter then unless you catch a squirl or a bird you are pretty much screwed.
